Mohawks Top Dawgs 11-5 in front of 3024 fans in Home Opener
The Amsterdam Mohawks baseball team opened up their season on the road on June 5th at Veterans Memorial Field where they defeated the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs in their season opener. The Mohawks returned home on Saturday night for their home opener at Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam. There was a tremendous turn out for the game as the Mohawks performed in front of a capacity crowd. They did not disappoint either as they jumped on the visiting Diamond Dawgs in the first inning and cruised to three early runs in the first. This was due in large part to Chad Salem's monster 2 run homer that towered over the left field fence. After a Dan Gamache walk, the Mohawks almost got another home run from Austin Sheffield who hit a long fly ball to right field that just hit the top of the fence and on this play Gamache trucked around the bases to score all the way from first base to give the Mohawks a 3-0 lead at the end of the first inning. The Dawgs starting pitcher Mike Mason struggled with his control all night as he labored through the fifth inning. He walked the bases loaded and eventually walked home a run in the second inning making it a 4-0 deficit. The Diamond Dawgs started to chip away at this lead with a Navarro Hall 2-run homer in the 4th inning that cut the score to 4-2 and then got another run in the 5th that cut it to 4-3. The Mohawks then got some timely pitching from winning pitcher Braden Kapteyn, Brendan Chapin, Barry Kieffer and Eric Pettepher who combined to only allow two more runs on the evening after that point. Dan Gamache delivered in the sixth with a two run double that scored Tillman Pugh as well as Chad Salem to make the score 6-3. Short Stop Tony Patane drove in Austin Sheffield with an RBI double in the following inning to make the score 7-3. The Diamond Dawgs cut the score to 7-5 before Randy Verdin was brought in the game to pitch and that was all she wrote. Verdin walked the bases loaded and gave up two runs on two wild pitches and the Mohawks also scored two runs on an error by third basemen Dave Soltis. This all occurred in the eighth inning and by that point the score had become 11-5 and the game was all but sealed. Eric Pettepher worked a scoreless 9th for the Mohawks to finish out this one as the Amsterdam Mohawks defeat the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs by a score of 11-5. The Mohawks used effective pitching and timely hitting in this one to get runs and out when they needed them the most. The Diamond Dawgs can attribute this loss to their erratic pitching and defense as they had six errors and several wild pitches on the night. This brings the Mohawks to 2-0 on the season while the Diamond Dawgs fall to 0-2. The Mohawks continue their season tomorrow night at Veterans Memorial Field in Little Falls where they will be taking on the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs once again.
