Watertown downs Mohawks 6-4

Mike Ciezko (RPI, W 2-0) plays his college ball just down the road from Amsterdam. His seven strong innings were enough to get him his second win of the season. Ciezko allowed two runs on six hits while striking out five.

On the flip side, Matt Conway (Wake Forest, L 0-1) took some lumps in his first action on the hill. The Wizards got two runs on three hits in the top of the first. Amsterdam responded though with Matt Colantonio (Brown) singling home Mel Rojas Jr. (Wabash Valley CC) in the bottom of the frame.
The score held at 2-1 until the top of the fourth when Larry Balkwill blasted a two-run homer to make it 6-4. Conway pitched four innings, allowing four runs and striking out one.

Taylor Lewis (Maine) doubled home Rick Pacione (Marist) in the bottom of the seventh, but Cieszko retired three straight to leave with a 4-2 lead.

The Wizards extended that lead in the eighth when Larry Balkwill (Siena) singled home two runs off Sean Bouthilette (Kentucky). Bouthilette, a member of the 2009 championship team, was making his first appearance of the season.

The Mohawks loaded the bases on walks, and Marshall Thompson (West Virginia) even walked in a run, but Scott Whitehead (Canisius) came on to get the save. Colantonio got his fourth hit of the game against Whitehead to make it 6-4, but Jon Schwind (Marist) struck out looking to leave the bases loaded.

The Mohawks return to action Saturday night, hosting Cooperstown on Gloversville night. First pitch is at 7:05.
