Mohawks fend off Oneonta 11-7

Oneonta (5-6) kept rallying, but the Mohawks (7-2) led wire to wire for an 11-7 win at home. Amsterdam used a couple big flies and timely pitching to secure their seventh straight win.

Mel Rojas Jr. (Wabash Valley CC) singled to lead off the game and stole second. Taylor Lewis (Maine) walked, then Matt Colantonio (Brown) bunted a ball hard to third that was overrun by the third baseman. Rojas scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Already flustered, Nick Slogik’s (L 0-1) night got even worse as his next pitch was launched for a three-run homer by Matt Conway (Wake Forest).

The Outlaw’s pushed across an unearned run in the second, but Jason Brooks (Dartmouth) responded with a two-run home run in a three-run bottom half of the inning. Brooks and Conway are now tied for the team lead with two home runs each.

Matt Goulas’ three-run blast in the fifth got Oneonta back in it, but every time Oneonta clawed back in the Mohawks had an answer. Conway added a sac fly in the eighth for his fourth rbi, giving him a team-leading 13 on the season.

Justin Van Grouw (W 1-0, Wake Forest) went five to get the win. Chris Bielak (Marist) pitched three scoreless innings to get the save.

The Mohawks travel to Little Falls tomorrow to take on the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs, led by former Mohawks’ assistant Troy Gerlach. First pitch is at 7:05.
