Golden Eagles stifle Mohawks
One run is rarely enough to beat a team. It was almost enough for Amsterdam (8-5) Wednesday night, but Glens Falls (8-3) rallied late for a 3-1 win.
Kyle Sumple (W 2-0) threw the ball away after Matt Conways (Wake Forest) infield single in the top of the first, allowing John Schwind (Marist) to score. Schwind was hit by a pitch with two outs to start the rally.
Sumple bent but didnt break in the second, walking the bases loaded before inducing an inning ending tap out from Taylor Lewis (Maine). The Mohawks didnt put another runner on until TJ Spina (Sante Fe CC) singled leading off the eighth.
Justin Van Grouw (Wake Forest) continued his solid season, holding Glens Falls to one run on seven hits. Jason Patten (L 1-2, Radford) finished got the final two outs in the sixth.
In the eighth the Mohawks put runners on second and third with nobody away. Sumple wriggled out of trouble against the heart of the order, finishing his night with just three hits and an unearned run allowed. Clay Murphy worked a perfect ninth for the save.
Patten allowed two runs in the eighth. The eight and nine hole hitters each drove in a run for the Golden Eagles.
The Mohawks return home, where they
have a three-game win streak, to face Mohawks Valley tomorrow.
