Rally in Ninth Keys Win

The Mohawks (11-6) rallied late to stun the Hawkeyes (8-9) 7-5 in Cooperstown. Cody Kulp (Shippensburg) cracked a two-run game winning home run and Abram Williams (Radford) pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Cooperstown led for most of the game, striking first with a run off Sam Kidd (Kentucky) in the bottom of the first. Amsterdam tied it in the third when Mel Rojas Jr. (Wabash Valley CC) singled, stole second, and scored when Jon Schwind (Marist) reached on an error by the shortstop.

The bottom of the fourth was a long inning for two different reasons. The Hawkeyes batted around against Kidd, scoring three runs, and as the ninth batter stepped to the plate a 23-minute downpour began. The delay lasted for more than two hours while the field was repaired.

Two runs in the sixth made it 4-3, but a solo shot in the eighth stretched the deficit to two runs.

With one out in the top of the ninth, Rojas bunted for a hit and Matt Colantonio (Brown) walked. With Dan Zlotnick (Marist) pinch running for the catcher, the pair moved into scoring position on Schwinds groundout. In a 3-2 count, Matt Conway (Wake Forest) singled to knot the game at 5-5. Kulp came up next with the game winner.

Jason Patten (Radford) worked four and a third innings after the delay to pick up the win, including escaping a bases loaded jam in the first at-bat after the delay.

The win snaps a streak of four straight road losses by the Mohawks. They return home, where they have won six straight, to take on the Diamond Dawgs Monday night. First pitch is at 7:05.
