Tough loss at Oneonta 7-5

Oneonta (16-11) used a five-run third inning to even their season series with the Mohawks (16-8) at 2-2. The Outlaws hung on through multiple rallies to win 7-5. Each team has won both home meetings, but more critical is that the Outlaws have moved to within 1.5 games of Amsterdam in the standings.

The Mohawks briefly led 1-0 as Rick Pacione (Marist) scored on a double-play grounder off the bat of Kyle Koeneman (LSU). Koeneman also doubled and homered later in the game.

In the third inning Sam Kidds (L 1-2, Kentucky) walks caught up to him. Kidd worked around two each in the first and second, but three walks and three hits in the third chased the righty and put the Outlaws up 5-1. Derek Zielinski (Le Moyne) got the last out of the third and pitched the next two innings, allowing only an unearned run.

Cody Kulp (Shippensburg) got one run back in the fourth, turning on the first pitch he saw for his fifth home run of the season, tying him for second in the league and putting him first on the team. In the top of the sixth the Mohawks did more damage. Taylor Lewis (Maine) had an rbi groundout in front of a two-run bomb by Koeneman to make the score 6-5.

Amsterdam got no closer, as the Outlaws tacked on a run against Jason Patten (Radford) in the seventh to make it 7-5. Kevin Dickey worked two scoreless innings for a six-out save. Michael Cook picked up his first win for the Outlaws.

The Mohawks will visit their closest challengers again tomorrow night. Justin Van Grouw (Wake Forest) will take the ball for the Mohawks for a 7:05 first pitch.
