Six straight for Mohawks as Reyes debuts
The cavalry arrived for the Mohawks (23-12) Tuesday night in the form of AJ Reyes (Polk State CC). The right-hander flew in the night before as an injury replacement and made the start on the hill, throwing five scoreless to get the win in a 3-2 victory over Mohawk Valley (13-18).
Diamond Dawgs ace Dustin Stanton was steady, but a big third inning was all the Mohawks would need. Matt Colantonio (Brown) tripled and was brought home on Cody Kulp's (Shippensburg) sac fly. After Rick Pacione (Marist) reached on an infield hit with one out, Kyle Koeneman (LSU) homered for the third day in a row to make it 3-0.
Reyes took advantage of the run support, throwing five scoreless and allowing only three base runners while striking out eight. Dan Zlotnick (Marist) worked a scoreless sixth and Kulp got through the seventh with the lead narrowly in tact at 3-2.
The Dawgs got the tying run to second in the eighth, but Jason Patten (Radford) stepped up and shut the door with two innings of scoreless relief for his first save.
The same two teams meet in Little Falls tomorrow. A win would clinch a playoff berth for the Mohawks. First pitch is at 7:05.
