8-Run First Propels Mohawks to 12-3 win over Adirondack

By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

The Amsterdam Mohawks started the fireworks early on Wednesday night at Rao Family Stadium. The Mohawks scored 8 runs in the first inning and defeated the Adirondack Trail Blazers by a score of 12-3.

Mitch Hartigan opened the scoring for the Mohawks with a bases loaded double that scored DJ Poteet and Landon Jordan. Kevin Jimenez came up next with a base hit to score Max Costes. After a walk to Geordon Blanton, Michael Turconi hit a ball up the middle that was misplayed by the shortstop and allowed Mitch Hartigan and Kevin Jimenez to score. Paul Franzoni followed with a double that drove in Geordon Blanton as the Mohawks lead 6-0. Adirondack starter Gino Holler then hit Rook Ellington in his second at-bat of the inning to reload the bases as that marked the end of Holler’s outing.

Nick Jaskolski came in and got DJ Poteet to fly out to left for the second out, but Michael Turconi was able to tag up and score on the play. Landon Jordan was next up and reached on an error by the third baseman which allowed Paul Franzoni to score as the Mohawks lead 8-0 at the end of the first inning.

In the second inning, Michael Turconi hit a 2-run home run to give the Mohawks a 10-run lead.

The Trail Blazers finally got to Mohawks starter Bryce Brock in the third inning. A lead off walk and a base hit put 2 runners on for Kevin Ferrer as he hit an RBI double to put Adirondack on the board. Connor Hamilton followed with a single up the middle to score a run and Vincent Cimini hit a sac-fly to right as the Trail Blazers scored 3 in the third.

That would be the only difficult inning for Amsterdam as Bryce Brock went the first 4 and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 7 strikeouts. Dale Stanavich followed with 3 scoreless innings as he allowed 1 hit and 1 walk with 6 strikeouts. Mitch Hartigan pitched a perfect eighth with 2 strikeouts and Ryan Cardona struckout the side in order in the ninth.

The Mohawks offense tacked on another run in the fourth on a Sam Zayicek single that drove in Johnny Decker and in the seventh, Decker was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in Landon Jordon as the Mohawks went up 12-3.

Kevin Jimenez was 3-for-4 in the game with a double, an RBI, 2 runs scored and stole a base. Mitch Hartigan hit 2 doubles, drove in 2 runs as the Mohawks improved to 20-5.

Tomorrow night the Mohawks are on the road as they face the Glens Falls Dragons at 7:05.
