By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

The Amsterdam Mohawks scored 10 runs in the final 2 innings and defeated the Glens Falls Dragons 14-2 on Thursday night at East Field.

The Mohawks were staked to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Max Costes doubled and drove in Dalton Reese.

Eric Cerantola started for Amsterdam and struck out 6 of the first 7 batters he faced. It wasn’t until the third inning that Cerantola faced adversity. After a strikeout to start the inning, there was a single, a hit batter and walk to load the bases. There was a shallow flyball to short that was caught for the second out and then Brian Hart gave the Dragons a 2-1 lead with a 2-run double.

The Mohawks tied the game at 2 in the fourth as Mitch Hartigan scored on a wild pitch.

In the fifth the Mohawks took a 4-2 lead on a 2-run single by Paul Franzoni that scored Landon Jordon and Mitch Hartigan.

The game stayed at 4-2 until the eighth inning and that’s when the wheels came off for the Dragons. As the Mohawks would score 4 in the eighth and 6 in the ninth.

In the eighth, Dalton Reese drove in Paul Franzoni with a single and Landon Jordan walked with the bases loaded to force in Michael Turconi. With the bases loaded the Dragons went to Spencer Smith and the Mohawks quickly jumped on his delivery as Sam Zayicek broke from third and stole home. The pitch ended up going to the backstop and with Landon Jordan quickly followed behind Zayicek and scored as the Mohawks lead 8-2 in the eighth.

In the ninth, Dalton Reese opened the scoring again as he drove in Michael Turconi and Geordon Blanton with a 2-run single. Landon Jordan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and forced in Sam Zayicek. A couple batters later, Paul Franzoni hit a 2-run single to drive in Dalton Reese and Kevin Jimenez. Michael Turconi followed and reached on an error as Landon Jordan came in to score as the Mohawks lead 14-2.

Paul Franzoni lead the Mohawks with 4 hits, a double and 3 RBI. Dalton Reese had 3 singles, drove in 3 runs and scored 3 runs.

The Mohawks only allowed 4 hits to the Glens Falls Dragons and recorded 16 strikeouts. Eric Cerantola picked up his first win with the Mohawks. He went 5 innings, allowed 2 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and recorded 9 strikeouts. Drew Wilden threw 1 inning and allowed 1 hit with 2 strikeouts. Will Gambino recorded 1 out in the seventh and walked 2, Rye Gunter came in and got out of a bases loaded jam to finish the inning, keeping the Dragons off the board. Ryan Cardona pitched a scoreless eighth as he allowed 1 hit and recorded 2 strikeouts and Michael Turconi finished the game as he struck out the side in order in the ninth.

Amsterdam improved to 21-5 with the win, while the Dragons fell to 7-18.

The Mohawks travel to Utica on Friday and will face the Blue Sox at 6:45.
