After suffering just their second defeat of the season on Thursday, the Amsterdam Mohawks got right back on track in Game 1 of a doubleheader on Friday against the Boonville Lumberjacks with a 7-0 win at Smith Sports Complex.

Gage Miller (Bishop State/Alabama) wasted no time as he took the third pitch of the game for a double to left field. The double was the 20th of his Mohawks career, passing Zak Colby for 4th place on the Mohawks All-Time List. He then scored on a Cam Gurney (Utah) groundout to put Amsterdam up 1-0.

With runners on the corners, Jalen DeBose (FAU) stole second and the throw to second opened the door for Zach Eldred (Brockport) to steal home and give the Mohawks a 2-0 lead. Bruer Webster (Utah) followed with a 2-run double to right, which allowed Jalen DeBose and Marek Houston (Wake Forest) to score, making it 4-0. The next batter, Jared Johnson (Brown) hit another double and drove in Webster making it 5-0 and Alex Irizarry (Maryland) put an early end to starting pitcher Alden Halfinger’s (Salem) day as an RBI single made it 6-0 with 2 outs in the first.

The scoring ended in the second inning as Cam Gurney reached on a walk and scored on a Marek Houston sac-fly making it 7-0.

From there it was all Tyler Sausville (New Haven). The lefty went the complete game and flirted with a no-hitter until the seventh and final inning. That was when Darnell Guerrero (Alliance) pinch-hit to lead off the inning and took the first pitch back up the middle for a single to center field. The rally was short lived however, as Jalen DeBose threw him out trying to extend it into a double. Sausville then struck out the next 2 batters to put an end to the game.

Improving to 5-0 on the season, Sausville pitched a complete game shutout 1-hitter, with 2 walks and 9 strikeouts as the Mohawks improved to 26-2.

Alden Halfingers dropped to 0-5 as the Lumberjacks fell to 7-18. Ryan Sullivan (Colby) and Jack Gazdacka (Ottawa University Arizona) did a phenomenal job out of the pen to keep Amsterdam off the board. Sullivan went 2.1 innings allowing 1 run on no hits, 6 walks and 2 strikeouts. Gazdacka went 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 walk with 1 strikeout.

Bruer Webster was the only player on either side in the first game to record multiple hits, going 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, 2 RBI and a run scored.

Game 2 picked up where the Mohawks left off in the first game. The Mohawks scored 5 runs in the second inning as Eddie Yamin hit a sac-fly to score Jalen DeBose and Jared Johnson hit a grand slam to make it 5-0.

In the third, Jalen DeBose scored on another sac-fly, this time by Maximus Martin. The fourth featured Merek Houston scoring on a Luke Longo sac-fly as the Mohawks took a 7-0 lead.

Amsterdam then had another 5-run inning and hit another grand slam in the fifth. Jalen DeBose scored on a bases loaded walk to Eddie Yamin and Gage Miller hit a grand slam for his 15th career home run, tying Maxwell Costes for 2nd All-Time. That made the score 12-0, which triggers the run rule in double headers.

The Mohawks combined for a 5-inning no-hitter on the mound. Zach Eldred earned his first win by pitching 4 hitless innings, allowing 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Benjamin Huckans (St. John Fisher) made his Mohawks debut pitching a perfect fifth with 2 strikeouts to cap off the 12-0 win as the Mohawks improved to 27-2.

Bryce Collis (St. John Fisher) took the loss for Boonville falling to 0-1 as the Lumberjacks now fall to 7-19 on the season.

The Mohawks are off on Saturday and will travel to Glens Falls on Sunday to take on the Dragons at 7:00.
