Mohawks Avenge Loss to Rapids With 15-0 Win

After being defeated by the Watertown Rapids for the first time in 10 years on July 15th, the Mohawks answered back on Thursday night at Toyota Park with a 15-0, one-hit victory.

Amsterdam scored 7 in the third and 6 in the sixth to pit the game away. Luke Longo (NJIT) hit 2 doubles and drove in 3 runs. Mason Swinney (Alabama), Cam Gurney (Utah), Jaxson West (Alabama/Florida State) and Jalen DeBose (FAU) all recorded multiple hits.

The Mohawks took the lead in the second inning as Cam Gurney led off the inning with a double and scored on a Jaxson West single.

In the third, Luke Longo drove in Dakota Duffalo (Utah) with a double and then scored on a Cam Gurney single to make it 3-0. Jaxson West then drove in Cam Gurney with a single and an error allowed Marek Houston (Wake Forest) to score on the same play as the Mohawks took a 5-0 lead. Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) hit a 2-run double to drive in Jaxson West and Jalen DeBose, then Luke Zeisloft (Maryland) immediately followed with a double to drive in Hubbard and cap off a 7-run inning as the Mohawks took an 8-0 lead.

In the fourth inning, Watertown’s second basemen committed back-to-back errors which allowed Luke Longo to score making it 9-0.

In the sixth, Luke Longo struck again with a 2-run double driving in Dakota Duffalo and Mason Swinney to make it 11-0. Longo’s double was his 15th of the season, passing John Nogowski and Joe Genord (2016) and tying him with Josh Gardiner (2013) and Gage Miller (2022) for 2nd most in a single season. It was also his 42nd RBI of the season tying him with the league lead and just 3 behind Joe Genord and his record 45 RBI in 2016.

As the sixth inning continued, Max Martin (Rutgers) hits a sac-fly to score Alex Irizarry (Maryland), Jalen DeBose hit an RBI single that drove in Luke Longo while Eddie Yamin (Dayton) scored on an error on the same play and Jalen DeBose scored on a wild pitch to cap off a 6-run inning as the Mohawks took a 15-0 lead.

Maximilian Ramirez started and improved to 3-0. He only allowed 1 hit, (a leadoff single to Bryce Phelps in the second inning) with 2 walks and 6 strikeouts over 5.1 shutout innings. Carson Cotugno finished the game with 1.2 hitless innings as the Mohawks improved to 35-5-1 on the season and 7-1 against the Rapids.

Jared Duquette (St. Michael’s) took the loss for Watertown falling to 1-5 as the Rapids fall to 15-29 on the season.

The Mohawks will host the Glens Falls Dragons in the final regular season home game of the season on Friday for Fireworks Night.
