Handsome Monica (Arizona) homered three times in two games combined to help the Amsterdam Mohawks defeat the Victor RailRiders 14-4 and 6-1 in a doubleheader on Tuesday night.
Monica finished the night 3-for-7 with three home runs, four runs, and six RBIs. Craig Dedelow (Indiana) contributed multiple RBIs as well as he went a combined 3-for-6 with a single, two doubles, two runs, and two RBIs.
Victor was led by Matt Fallon (Black Hawk College) who went 2-for-6 with two singles and three RBIs and Connor Golden (Marietta) who went 1-for-3 with a single and run scored in the second game.
Monica’s first home run came in the bottom of the third and extended the Mohawks lead to 5-0 as Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) and Dedelow also came around to score as part of a five run inning. Monica’s solo shot in the bottom of the fourth extended the Mohawks lead to 8-0. Victor would finally get on the board in the top of the sixth, before Amsterdam responded with a six-run bottom half that put the game out of reach.
In game two, Monica picked up right where he left off. With Mohawks ahead 1-0 after Tracy’s RBI single scored Drew Freedman (Wake Forest), Monica launched his third home run of the doubleheader, a two-run shot to make it 3-0 Amsterdam. Kyle Dean (BYU) added to the lead with a two-RBI The RailRiders scratched a run across in the top of the sixth when Connor Golden (Marietta) came in to score on Matt Fallon’s (Black Hawk College) RBI single. Amsterdam answered in the bottom half after Tracy beat out an infield single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Manea’s single to left.
On the mound, Jake Mielock (Tampa) picked up the win in game one after going 5.2 innings, giving up one hit, two runs (both earned), two walks and four strikeouts. He improved to 3-2. The loss was charged to John Saviano (NJIT), who dropped to 3-3 after giving up seven runs (four earned) on eight hits, walking two and striking out one.
In game two, the win went to Joe Nellis (Herkimer) who improved to 1-0. Nellis went four scoreless innings, allowed two hits, and struck out four. The loss went to Joe DeAngelis (Tompkins-Cortland CC). DeAngelis went five innings, allowed nine hits, six earned runs, one walk, and struck out three. He dropped to 1-2.
The Mohawks improved to 28-7 and will stay home to face the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at Shuttleworth Park at 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday. Victor (18-17) will look to bounce back Wednesday night when they travel to Dunn Field to play the Elmira Pioneers at 7:05 p.m.
